Zozo-ji (temple), Shiba Koen, central Tokyo

Brilliant red sangadetsumon leading to Zozo-ji temple. This wooden structure dates back to 1622 but the rest of the temple complex was destroyed in WWII.
Zozo-ji is famous for housing the graves of six of the Tokugawa clan, shoguns that brought  Japan's feudal system to an end.
If you are going to have a 'posh' front door, it makes sense to paint it red and build it BIG!
Cute little carved stone trough in the temple courtyard
Part of this temple is dedicated to all those children that are either sick or were lost in childbirth. All the statues in this tiny garden wear hats or bonnets - to keep the children warm in cold weather.
